Iran Urges Europe to Rectify JCPOA Stance – Politics news

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei described the upcoming talks with the European JCPOA signatories as a valuable opportunity for Europe to revise its position on Iran’s nuclear file.

Speaking to IRNA, Baqaei said that the meeting serves as a test for the three European countries to prove whether they can act independently and realistically.

He expressed regret over the biased positions of the three European countries regarding the military aggression by the Zionist regime and the United States against Iran, saying their stance effectively portrayed them as apologists for international law violations and acts of aggression.

“Islamic Republic of Iran had previously objected to these biased positions and will again raise its protests during Friday’s session,” he said.

Commenting on the European threat to trigger the JCPOA’s snapback mechanism, Baqaei stated there is no justification for keeping Iran’s nuclear issue on the Security Council’s agenda.

He argued that the European states have disqualified themselves from using such mechanisms due to their continuous violations of the nuclear deal and their support for attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities.

Baqaei stressed that reinstating UN Security Council resolutions scrapped under Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA lacks legal, ethical, and logical basis.

He said Iran remains a party to the JCPOA and has only taken remedial steps a year after the US withdrawal, all in accordance with the deal.

“The European states, having violated their commitments, cannot accuse Iran of breaching a resolution they themselves ignored,” he added.

“In other words, the three European countries, through their persistent violations of JCPOA commitments and their support for US and Israeli military aggression on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities—which constitute a breach of Resolution 2231 and an assault on its core principle of affirming Iran’s peaceful nuclear program including enrichment—have knowingly compromised their status as JCPOA participants. As a result, they no longer possess the legal standing to invoke—or even extend—mechanisms under the very agreement they have themselves violated,” he stated.

Baqaei also addressed reports suggesting the extension of Resolution 2231 by European parties, dismissing such efforts as groundless and illegitimate.

Baqaei said reinstating Security Council resolutions that were nullified in 2015 under the JCPOA and Resolution 2231 lacks any legal, ethical, or rational basis.

He emphasized that Iran remains a party to the JCPOA and that its remedial measures, taken one year after the US withdrawal, were in accordance with the agreement and a direct response to American and European breaches.

He added that the three European countries, having consistently violated their own commitments, have no legal or logical standing to accuse Iran of breaching a resolution they themselves disregarded.

He pointed to Israel’s influence on the European position, stating it is unsurprising that Tel Aviv, the region’s only nuclear-armed regime and the main saboteur of the JCPOA, seeks to dictate terms to Europe.

“The real question is whether the trio are willing to further sacrifice their credibility for Israel’s malign agenda,” Baqaei said.

On Iran-IAEA cooperation, Baqaei blamed Israel and the US for the suspension of Tehran’s collaboration with the agency.

He said attacks on Iranian nuclear sites have undermined safety and violated international norms, urging global condemnation and accountability.

Baqaei reaffirmed that Iran remains a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement, but said any engagement with the IAEA is now subject to Iran’s parliamentary law requiring coordination with the Supreme National Security Council.

Regarding the planned visit by a senior IAEA official to Iran, Baqaei confirmed the trip is expected within weeks, aimed at negotiating a new cooperation framework. Meanwhile, he clarified that there is no plan for visits to the nuclear facilities damaged in recent Israeli and US attacks.
