Leader Pardons, Reduces Sentences of Eligible Iranian Convicts – Society/Culture news

On the eve of the 17th of Rabi al-Awwal, marking the birth anniversaries of Prophet Muhammad al-Mustafa (PBUH) and Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (PBUH), the Leader of the Islamic Revolution agreed to the request of the head of the Judiciary to grant amnesty and reduce the sentences of a number of eligible convicts.

In his letter, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei requested pardoning and sentence reductions for eligible convicts by the Public and Revolutionary courts, the Government Discretionary Punishments Organization, or by the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces, whose sentences are finalized by September 10.

Regarding those convicted of security-related crimes, the letter states that more than five years must have passed since the final ruling without execution of the sentence, and that since the issuance of the verdict, they must not have engaged in any actions or positions against national interests, security, or national unity, Khamenei.ir reported.

According to the letter, inmates suffering from incurable or severe illnesses are also eligible for this amnesty, provided their condition is verified by the Legal Medicine Commission.

Part of this pardoning and sentence reduction also applies to those fined with monetary penalties, details of which are outlined in the judiciary head’s letter.

However, certain crimes are excluded from this pardoning and reduction, including armed robbery or robbery involving violence or repeat offenders, armed narcotics and psychotropic drug crimes, trafficking and trading of military firearms and ammunition, crimes against internal and external security, espionage and collaboration with hostile states and membership in terrorist groups, kidnapping, acid attacks, counterfeiting currency and minting fake coins, direct involvement or complicity in major disruptions of the economic system, and alcohol smuggling.
